How It Works
The formula, explained simply
Think of BMI as a single number that summarises the ratio between your mass and your frame size. It does not look inside your body — it simply compares how much you weigh against how tall you are. A taller person has more surface area and bone structure to carry weight, so the formula squares the height to make the comparison fair across different body frames.
The resulting number gets slotted into four categories that came from population-level studies tracking health outcomes. The ranges were not set by measuring body fat in a lab — they were set by observing where disease risk started to rise in large groups of people. That is useful for public health trends, but it explains why the ranges feel imprecise when applied to a single individual.
BMI was never designed as a personal health verdict. Its inventor, Adolphe Quetelet, developed it in the nineteenth century to study populations statistically, not to assess individuals. Modern medicine uses it as a quick, costless screening step — one signal among many, not a diagnosis.
When To Use This
Right tool, right situation
Use this tool when you want a quick orientation on where your weight sits relative to established population norms. It is appropriate for annual self-checks, tracking progress during a fitness or weight-loss programme, and as a starting point before a conversation with a GP or dietitian. The result gives you a number to anchor that conversation rather than walking in with no baseline.
BMI is also useful when comparing weight change over time for the same person. Even if the absolute value has limitations, a directional trend in BMI for the same individual is meaningful — a sustained reduction over two years reflects a real change in weight-to-height ratio regardless of whether any single number is a perfect health indicator.
Do not use BMI as the sole assessment for children and teenagers (different age-adjusted charts apply), pregnant women, older adults experiencing muscle loss (muscle loss can push BMI down while health risk rises), or highly trained athletes. In these cases, BMI will systematically mislead and a clinician should interpret the picture using additional data.
Common Mistakes
Why results sometimes look wrong
Entering height in the wrong unit. The most common data entry error is typing a height of 175 when the unit system is set to imperial — which the calculator reads as 175 feet, far outside any human range. Always check which unit system is selected before entering numbers. The calculator will flag heights outside a realistic range, but always double-check your inputs visually.
Assuming BMI equals body fat percentage. People often read an overweight BMI as confirmation they carry too much fat, when the reading might be driven by above-average muscle mass or a dense bone structure. BMI has no way to distinguish between a kilogram of fat and a kilogram of muscle. If you are active and your BMI sits near a category boundary, a DEXA scan or hydrostatic weighing gives a more reliable answer.
Treating the healthy range as a target weight. The calculator shows a healthy weight range for your height, but the boundaries of that range are not clinical targets — they are statistical thresholds. A BMI just below 25 is not meaningfully healthier than one just above it. Focus on trends over time and on metabolic markers (blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol) rather than hitting a specific BMI number.
The Math
Worked examples and deeper derivation
The BMI formula is weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in metres. Written out: BMI = weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. For the example inputs of 1.75 m height and 74 kg, that gives a BMI of 24.2.
When you enter imperial units, the calculator first converts pounds to kilograms using the conversion factor of 0.4536 kg per pound, and feet and inches to metres before applying the same formula. No separate imperial formula exists — the conversion happens first, then one formula runs.
The healthy weight range displayed is derived by reversing the formula. Plugging in BMI values of 18.5 and 25 with your height gives the lower and upper bounds of the healthy weight corridor. The weight-to-go figure is simply the difference between your current weight and the nearest boundary of that range.

The thing most explanations skip
The core limitation of the BMI formula is that dividing by height squared assumes mass scales with the square of height, but human bodies are three-dimensional — mass actually scales closer to the cube of a linear dimension. This means BMI systematically underestimates adiposity in shorter people and overestimates it in taller people. Two people at notably different heights but the same BMI do not have equivalent body compositions relative to their frames. Some researchers have proposed adjusting the exponent above 2, though the WHO thresholds have not been updated to reflect this critique.
