The Lab

Most of figured.fyi is calculators: one question, one answer, one visit. A few things do not fit that shape. They hold state, or they are returned to, or they need looking after. They live here.

This page also shows what is being built, what is still an open question, and what has been turned down. Most sites keep the last one private. It is the most useful of the three.

Shiftlog

A work journal for Chrome.

Shiftlog runs a block of work. When it ends, it asks one question, and that answer becomes a record you can actually read back. It lives in a browser tab, keeps entries by day and week, and asks nothing of you beyond the sentence you were already thinking.

The rule it is built onNo streaks, no scores, no completion percentages. The moment a tool rewards consistency, people write entries that keep a number alive rather than entries that are true, and the record stops being worth having.

Building now

Started, unfinished, and named so that they stop being vague intentions.

Colour generator. Pick a colour and see it. Our two colour tools convert between formats and never show you the colour, which is the entire point of a colour tool.
Currency converter, second pass. Pinned currencies and a multi-row workspace, for people who work across several at once rather than converting one number and leaving.

Open questions

Not a roadmap. Each of these is stuck on something real, and the sentence says what.

A statistics family. Mean, standard deviation, percentile, z-score, confidence interval. The open question is not whether to build them but whether each can be verified against a known answer at the moment it is built, rather than trusted because it looks right.
An electrician's set. Voltage drop, conduit fill, box fill, wire ampacity. The calculators are straightforward. The open question is whether the thing that binds them together can exist without an account, and results here are never gated.
Something that is worth returning to. Almost everything here answers a question once and is forgotten. What would earn a second visit, without a streak, a badge, or a reminder email? Genuinely unresolved.

Turned down

Decisions already made, with the reasoning that was actually used at the time.

Image converters, background removers, favicon makers. Excellent free versions already exist, made by people giving them away. Building a worse one with adverts on it is not a contribution.
Anything that tells you what to do. Tools here compute and show. A calculator that says “you should sell” or “you can afford this” has crossed from arithmetic into advice, and it has no business doing that from behind a form.
Results held back for an email address. The answer appears whether or not you give us anything. Capture belongs at export, if anywhere.
Streaks, scores and completion rings. They change what people record. See Shiftlog, above.

Nothing here asks for an email or an account, and the calculators never will either. If something on this page is useful to you, that is the whole transaction.
