The formula, explained simply
Most people treat BMI as a mysterious fitness score, but it is simply your weight divided by the square of your height — a ratio that has been in clinical use since the 1970s. The number has one job: screening populations quickly. A single number cannot tell you whether you are healthy, but it can reliably flag when weight is likely to be a risk factor worth examining further.
The WHO categories — Underweight, Normal, Overweight, and three Obese classes — were set by looking at large-scale mortality data and identifying where risk curves bend upward. The boundaries at 18.5 and 30 are not arbitrary round numbers; they mark statistically meaningful inflection points in population health outcomes. That is why crossing a boundary matters more than the precise decimal.
This tool adds two outputs that a basic BMI calculator skips: the healthy weight range for your exact height, and the distance in actual kilograms or pounds to the nearest category boundary. Both translate an abstract number into a concrete, actionable quantity — the weight you would need to reach to change your category — which is what most people actually need when they open a BMI calculator.
When To Use This
Right tool, right situation
BMI is appropriate for adults aged 18 and over who want a quick, consistent reference point for population-level weight risk. It works well for general health tracking, understanding how far you are from a standard threshold, and communicating with clinicians who use it as a baseline screening measure. The distance-to-boundary output is particularly useful when you have set a weight goal and want to know whether it is sufficient to change your clinical category.
BMI is not appropriate for children and teenagers — paediatric BMI uses age- and sex-adjusted percentile charts and this tool does not implement them. It is also unreliable for competitive athletes, bodybuilders, and people with very high muscle mass, where actual body fat percentage is the relevant measure. Pregnant women should not use BMI as a progress measure during pregnancy.
For clinical decisions — whether to start medication, consider surgery, or investigate metabolic markers — BMI is one input among many. Waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, and body composition scans each add information that BMI alone cannot provide. If your result sits near a boundary in either direction, do not act on it in isolation.
Common Mistakes
Why results sometimes look wrong
Entering height in the wrong unit. The most common mistake when switching between metric and imperial is entering centimetres into a feet field or vice versa. A height of 175 entered as feet instead of centimetres produces an implausibly low BMI and this tool flags it. Always verify the unit system selector before reading your result.
Using BMI to track short-term changes. BMI is a screening tool, not a progress metric. Weight fluctuates by several kilograms over a single day from hydration, food, and clothing. Checking BMI daily and expecting it to move linearly with diet or exercise leads to false conclusions. Monthly comparisons under consistent conditions are more informative.
Treating the category label as a diagnosis. BMI tells you which statistical risk band you are in — it does not diagnose disease, metabolic syndrome, or fitness level. A Normal BMI alongside high waist circumference, elevated blood pressure, or poor blood glucose can indicate greater risk than a slightly Overweight BMI in an otherwise healthy person. BMI is a starting point, not a conclusion.
The Math
Worked examples and deeper derivation
The formula is weight divided by height squared. In metric: BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)². For a person who is 175 cm tall and weighs 74 kg, height in metres is that value divided by 100, giving 1.8 m. BMI is then the weight divided by height squared, which gives 24.2.
For imperial inputs, the tool first converts feet and inches to metres using the exact conversion factors from the UNIT_CONVERSIONS table, and pounds to kilograms using the lb-to-kg factor, before applying the same formula. The conversion happens invisibly so the result is identical regardless of which unit system you choose.
The healthy weight range is computed by rearranging the formula: min healthy weight = 18.5 × height², max healthy weight = 24.9 × height². For the example inputs these give 56.7 kg and 76.3 kg. The distance to boundary is simply the difference between your actual weight and whichever boundary is nearest in your current category.

The thing most explanations skip
BMI uses height squared as the denominator, which implicitly assumes that body mass scales with the square of height. Empirically, mass scales closer to height to the power of 2.5 in adults, meaning that taller people are systematically assigned higher BMIs and shorter people lower ones at equivalent adiposity — a known bias called the Quetelet artifact. Some researchers advocate for the Ponderal Index (weight / height cubed) or New BMI (a constant multiplied by weight divided by height to the power of 2.5) as corrections, though neither has displaced WHO BMI in clinical practice. At the edges — very tall or very short individuals — this tool's distance-to-boundary output will be biased in the same direction as BMI itself.
