The formula, explained simply
Think of BMI as a ratio that compares how much you weigh to how much space you take up. A taller person is expected to weigh more simply because they have more body to fill — BMI corrects for that by dividing weight by height squared, not just height. The squaring reflects the fact that both width and depth of the body tend to scale with height, not just one dimension.
The result is a dimensionless number that places almost everyone in a predictable range regardless of their actual size. A person of short stature and another of very tall stature both use the same BMI scale — the formula normalises across the full height spectrum. That is why clinicians can use a single set of thresholds globally rather than height-specific charts for adults.
BMI was developed in the mid-19th century as a statistical tool for studying population weight trends, not individual health. Its widespread adoption in clinical settings came later, partly because it requires only two measurements anyone can take at home. The simplicity is its strength and its limitation — it compresses a complex biological reality into one number.
When To Use This
Right tool, right situation
Use this calculator when you want a fast, objective reference point for your weight relative to your height — particularly before a medical appointment, when starting a fitness goal, or when tracking weight change over time. It works best as a periodic check rather than a daily metric, since weight naturally fluctuates and single readings can be misleading.
BMI is appropriate for adults with average muscle mass. It is the right first tool when you have no other health metrics available and need a number to anchor a conversation with a doctor or trainer.
Do not rely solely on BMI if you are an athlete with high muscle mass, are pregnant, are a child or teenager, or are an older adult. In these groups, the standard thresholds lose accuracy. Waist-to-height ratio or clinical body composition testing provides more context. BMI also does not capture where fat is stored — visceral fat around the abdomen carries different health implications than subcutaneous fat — so a number in the normal range does not rule out metabolic risk.
Common Mistakes
Why results sometimes look wrong
Entering height in the wrong unit. The most common error is entering 175 as metres rather than centimetres, producing a height of 175 m and an absurd BMI. Always confirm which unit the field expects. In metric mode, this tool expects centimetres — so 175, not 1.75 m.
Using clothing or drivers licence weight. Many people enter a weight they remember from a year ago or a number they rounded for convenience. BMI is sensitive to weight: a difference of even a few kilograms shifts the result noticeably. Use a recent, measured weight for a reliable output.
Treating BMI as a body fat percentage. A BMI of 25.5 does not mean 25.5 percent body fat. The two numbers are not comparable. BMI is a weight-to-height ratio; body fat percentage requires separate measurement methods like DEXA scan or skinfold calipers. Conflating them leads to misplaced confidence or unnecessary alarm.
The Math
Worked examples and deeper derivation
The formula is: BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)2. For the example of 175 cm and 78 kg, height in metres is 1.75, and height squared is 3.0625. Dividing 78 by 3.0625 gives a BMI of 25.5.
When using imperial units, the tool first converts feet and inches to metres using a factor of 2.54 cm per inch and 12 inches per foot, then converts pounds to kilograms using a factor of 0.453592 kg per pound. The identical BMI formula then applies. Both unit paths produce the same result for the same body.
The healthy weight range works in reverse: take each BMI threshold (18.5 and 24.9), multiply each by height squared, and you get the minimum and maximum weights that place a person in the healthy range for their specific height. For 175 cm, the healthy band runs from 56.7 kg to 76.3 kg.

The thing most explanations skip
The squaring of height in the denominator is a mathematical approximation of a 3D scaling relationship. In reality, body volume scales closer to height ^3 for most humans, which means BMI slightly underestimates fatness in tall people and overestimates it in short people. A taller person with a BMI of 25.5 carries proportionally less fat mass than a shorter person with the same BMI. This bias is well-documented and is one reason some researchers prefer the Ponderal Index (weight / height3) for individuals at height extremes. The standard thresholds of 18.5 and 24.9 were also calibrated on populations with particular demographic distributions, so they apply with varying precision across ethnic groups.
What does my BMI number actually mean?
BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. For the example of 175 cm and 78 kg, height in metres is 1.75, and height squared is 3.0625. Dividing 78 by 3.0625 gives a BMI of 25.5. The formula produces the same number regardless of whether you call it body mass index or BMI — it is a single universal calculation.
If you use pounds and inches, a conversion step happens first: weight is converted to kilograms and height to metres before applying the same division.
A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is generally classified as the healthy range for adults. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is classified as obese. These thresholds are used widely in clinical practice as a first-pass screening tool.
The categories do not distinguish between muscle and fat, so a very muscular person may show a high BMI while carrying little body fat. BMI is best treated as a starting point for a conversation, not a diagnosis.
BMI is a population-level screening tool, not a precise measure of individual health. It does not account for muscle mass, age, sex, ethnicity, or where body fat is distributed. For the majority of adults with average muscle mass, it correlates reasonably well with excess body fat risk.
For athletes, older adults, or people with high muscle mass, BMI consistently overstates or understates fat levels. In those cases, waist circumference, body fat percentage, or a clinical assessment gives a clearer picture.
