How It Works
The formula, explained simply
Imagine wrapping a gift box with paper. You measure around the box, multiply by its height, and that gives you the sheet size you need before any trimming. Wallpapering a room works the same way: the perimeter of the room times the wall height gives you the gross coverage area. From there, you subtract the space taken up by doors and windows, which do not need to be covered, and then add a buffer for the material lost to trimming and pattern matching.
The buffer matters more than most people expect. A simple solid or stripe pattern might only waste 10% to 15% of material at each cut. A large botanical or geometric repeat can waste an entire pattern unit at every horizontal seam, which adds up quickly across six or eight strips. Setting the waste allowance correctly is the difference between having one roll left over and having to stop mid-wall and wait for a reorder that may not match your existing dye lot.
Roll coverage is the other variable that catches people off guard. Many rolls are sold as double rolls but labeled confusingly, or the gross dimensions imply more coverage than the usable area after the factory trim edge is removed. Always use the usable square footage from the product page or label, not a number you calculated from width times length.
When To Use This
Right tool, right situation
Use this calculator any time you are ordering wallpaper for a room where you measure four walls at a consistent height. It works well for bedrooms, dining rooms, hallways, and powder rooms with standard rectangular floor plans. The calculation also applies to wallpaper panels used as an accent wall: just set the number of doors and windows to zero and enter only the accent wall dimensions as if they were a very narrow room.
The calculator is less reliable for rooms with significant architectural features that reduce the actual wall surface, such as chair rails, wainscoting, built-in shelving, or angled ceilings. For those cases, measure each flat section of wall individually, sum the areas manually, and enter the total as a custom roll coverage cross-check rather than relying on perimeter-times-height math.
Do not use this tool for specialty installations like vaulted ceilings, stairwells, or commercial spaces with non-standard height changes. Those projects require strip-by-strip planning rather than area estimation, and the waste factor will be significantly higher. A professional wallpaper hanger will measure and quote those spaces individually.
Common Mistakes
Why results sometimes look wrong
Using total roll dimensions instead of usable coverage. Multiplying the printed width by the roll length gives you gross area, not usable area. The factory trim edge, which runs along one or both sides of the roll, is removed during installation. Using the gross figure means you will be short by 5% to 15% depending on the product. Always use the coverage figure from the product label.
Forgetting the pattern repeat entirely. A first-time wallpaper hanger often measures the room, does the math, and orders the exact calculated quantity with a small waste buffer. Then they discover that each drop of paper must be cut longer to align the pattern, and three strips in they are already burning through rolls faster than expected. Any pattern with a vertical repeat larger than a few inches needs a higher waste allowance set in the waste percentage field.
Buying from different dye lots to save money on leftover rolls. Wallpaper is printed in batches, and the color shifts slightly between runs. If you under-order and reorder, the new rolls will not match, and the mismatch will be visible in raking light. It is far cheaper to buy one extra roll upfront than to repaper a section or live with a visible seam color shift.
The Math
Worked examples and deeper derivation
The calculation follows four sequential steps. First, compute the room perimeter: perimeter = 2 x (room length + room width). For the example room of 14 ft by 11 ft, that is 50 ft. Multiply by ceiling height of 8.5 ft to get the gross wall area of 154 sq ft.
Second, subtract the openings. Each door is treated as 21 sq ft and each window as 12 sq ft. For the example with 1 door and 2 windows, the deduction is 45 sq ft, leaving a net wall area of 380 sq ft sq ft.
Third, apply the waste multiplier. A 15% allowance means multiplying net area by 1.15, giving an adjusted area of 437 sq ft (with 15% waste). Fourth, divide that adjusted area by the roll coverage of 56 sq ft. The exact result is 7.8 rolls (exact) rolls, which the calculator rounds up to 8 rolls whole rolls to purchase.

The thing most explanations skip
The perimeter-times-height method assumes every wall runs to the same height and that openings are evenly distributed. In practice, wallpaper hangers often calculate by counting the number of drops (vertical strips) needed to go around the room, then determining how many strips come from one roll based on the cut height versus the roll width. This strip-count method is more accurate for large repeating patterns because it directly models the waste per cut rather than estimating it as a flat percentage. If your pattern repeat is known, calculate waste as (repeat height / ceiling height) x 100 and use that figure instead of a generic 15% or 20% percent.
